During my life as a student, I appeared for several examinations -both Indian and global, and secured gold medals & merit certificates in many of them.
During my life as a teacher, I have confronted students of various types–some who have been successful getting ranks, others who have struggled to pass.
Here I share with you the conclusions I have drawn from this dual experience of mine…I hope it may help some in getting a greater clarity on their path to next exams:
- You already know a number of things. But when you are taught that, you start feeling it’s new stuff and do not utilize your base knowledge in it. Part of the reason could be that the language of the institute/author diverts you from your existing knowledge. For instance, you pick up a topic say Exchange rate. You know what is Rs/$, $/£ etc, but even these become new stuff to you when you confront questions. So whenever you are studying a topic, try to think of what you already know about it. Even if you have no prior idea of that topic, there is some basic common sense that’s running in all topics– you got to use THAT as your base.
- Use your mother tongue (say Hindi for example) to think about that topic…whether its law or audit or whatever, the moment you bring your mother tongue into the picture, you can literally visualize things and you start operating in your own strength…your retention level and confidence level will both rise.
- You got to practice exam questions and exam papers …if it is the CA exams, you have the RTP, MTP and past papers. If it is the CFA exams, you have the Candidate Resources and Mocks. Those are the most representative and will be reflective of what you will see in the actual exam.
- Teach yourself by recording your own audios or writing your own short notes -it is better than the notes of any teacher. If you study with some friend, make it a point to keep zoom sessions in between to revise a topic …both have come prepared and the interaction will be fabulous…believe me. Because when a teacher teaches, its unilateral GYAAN going on…but when you all are interacting, you are not following, but Leading the discussion…mind runs at a much faster pace and retention level is very high!
- Cross tutoring-If you want to speed up revision, distribute chapters…one person will prepare a certain chapter and another will prepare another chapter and they could meet on zoom to teach that to each other…it would be better than any teaching from any teacher believe me.
- Maintain the much needed joy and happiness in your life. Try to see yourself from a little bit distance …do you really want to be that miserable? NO…! So take out time…talk to your family, friends, boyfriend or girlfriend and balance life. It’s scientifically proven that your efficiency and brains runs much faster when you are in a state of joy.
- On the day of the exam, your anxiety level needs to come down…do not do last minute rush up study…jo hona tha wo ho gaya…ab aur padhke LAW OF DIMINISHING MARGINAL UTILITY operate hoga! Have faith in yourself and approach the exam.
